Abstract: Relation by Captain Diego de Artieda to the King describing the voyage of the San Pedro and the San Lucas from New Spain to the Philippines. The account includes the passage by Guam and other Ladrones islands, where the people lived on rice, coconuts, bananas, and fish, using slings and fire-hardened sticks as weapons. Artieda also notes the harbor at Zubu (Cebu), recalling Magellan’s death at nearby Mactan, and the eventual relocation of the Spanish camp to Panae (Panay) for better provisions and security. He gives details on fortifications and artillery placements, praises the fertility of Panay, and remarks on trade, customs, and the strategic importance of the region.
