Abstract: THE article from which this is translated appeared in the "Memorial de Artillería " for August, 1891. Unfortunately, it was unaccompanied by a map, and as the subject deals with a part of the world but very little known, a map is doubly necessary to illustrate and explain the letter-press. I have, therefore, prepared a simple map to show the Caroline Group, and an inset of the island of Ponapi (Pohnpei), or Ascension, which was the scene of the sanguinary fighting herein recorded. The original article contained many typographical errors which I have endeavored to correct; but there are a few names mentioned which I have failed to trace on any maps.
