Abstract: This chapter considers adoption on Ponape (Pohnpei) Present tense is used to refer to the period of my field work from 1950 to 1953. What adoption may have been like in the period before major contact with modern nations is not a major concern of this chapter, except insofar as certain native beliefs and values may have persisted from ancient times and thus may have been an important influence on recent practice.
