Abstract: Documents 1685F contains two letters by Fr. Gerardo Bouwens reporting the March-April 1685 visit of a foreign vessel to Guam, identified in the volume as Captain Eaton's English pirate ship. The letters describe Governor Esplana's cautious contact with the ship, the captain's claim that he came from Bordeaux while bound for Japan, the request for water, wood, and provisions, the exchange of pigs and meat for firearms and powder, the ship's crew and armament, and the forwarding of intelligence to Manila, Mexico, and the Council of the Indies.
