Abstract: KPress Vol. 08 Iss. 11: NEWS: Pohnpei, FSM—controversy arose over power outages and streetlight disconnections after the Oliver family reported repeated billing for an exterior streetlight that they said had not been functioning for years, despite multiple letters sent to the Pohnpei Utilities Corporation (PUC); between April 16 and April 21, PUC broadcast announcements on Pohnpei State Radio V6AH informing the public that due to diesel fuel prices rising to $4.37 per gallon, the utility would begin disconnecting “excessive and unpaid” streetlights and terminating service to delinquent customers; Reed Oliver stated that in recent weeks PUC personnel disconnected power lines servicing a nahs and a chapel located on the family’s fenced property, along with a privately installed streetlight paid for by the family, because the buildings shared a meter with two streetlights, prompting dispute over whether PUC improperly cut power to private structures rather than public lighting; separate international news reports that convicted con man Peter Foster lost a Supreme Court appeal in Brisbane on April 18, 2008, with the full bench of the Supreme Court of Appeal rejecting his challenge to a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence imposed after he pleaded guilty to money-laundering charges arising from a scam that defrauded more than $300,000 from the Bank of the Federated States of Micronesia, noting that Foster transferred stolen funds to Australia where they were used to pay personal debts and expenses.
