Abstract: This introductory essay provides bio-sketches of Fathers Gerard Bouwens and Pedro Coomans and places them within the educational, religious, and archival world of the Flandro-Belgian Jesuit province. It explains how their early formation in Belgium shaped the missionaries who would later serve in the Marianas. The document is a useful contextual source for the pre-Marianas lives of two important Jesuit figures.
