Abstract: Fr. Alonso Pantoja petitions for the appointment of a governor or commander for the Mariana Islands, arguing that soldiers are needed to protect missionaries, maintain order, and support the Catholic mission. The Council’s decision of 5 July 1679 orders that the existing resolution be carried out; the editor notes that Captain José de Quiroga was being considered for governor.
