Abstract: This article examines social and economic conditions in Micronesia during the late stages of U.S. trusteeship, focusing on concerns about long-term dependency and limited prospects for self-sufficiency. It highlights widespread reliance on American aid, the dominance of government employment, and the decline of traditional subsistence practices. The report also addresses social challenges including alcohol abuse, unemployment, and urban deterioration, particularly in places such as Moen. It presents contrasting perspectives from Micronesian leaders and U.S. officials, illustrating tensions between political development and economic stagnation as the region moves toward greater autonomy.
