Abstract: Reports by Governor Guido de Lavezaris to the King for 1573–1574. He describes Manila’s growing role as the center of Spanish power in the Philippines, with tribute and trade expanding to nearby provinces. The letters note continuing shortages of supplies and soldiers, the burden of maintaining fortifications, and challenges in keeping local allies loyal. Lavezaris warns of threats from raiders and Moros, along with fears of renewed Portuguese incursions. He underscores Manila’s promise as a trading hub linking China, Japan, and New Spain, but stresses that its survival depends on steady royal aid and protection.
