Abstract: This article examines long-term demographic change in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia, with particular attention to population decline and recovery from the nineteenth through late twentieth centuries. Using census data and analysis of fertility, mortality, and migration, it identifies major phases of demographic transition, including severe depopulation due to introduced diseases followed by gradual population recovery under improved health conditions. The study highlights regional variation in population distribution across high islands and outer atolls, as well as the role of migration in shaping demographic patterns. It also considers the ecological, economic, and sociocultural implications of demographic change, emphasizing how population dynamics interact with resource constraints and regional development challenges in Micronesia.
