Abstract: A letter written by the Royal Audiencia of Mexico to the King. The letter informs the King about changes made to the instructions given to Legazpi by Luis de Velasco, who has passed away. The original instructions, influenced by Urdaneta’s opinion, were to sail towards New Guinea and explore its coasts. However, the Audiencia, after consulting experienced individuals, decided against this route due to the dangers and deviations from the intended course to the Western Islands. Instead, they ordered the fleet to sail directly to the Philippine Islands and surrounding areas via the route previously taken by Ruy López de Villalobos. The decision was supported by a letter from the King dated 24 September 1559, and the Audiencia disagreed with Urdaneta’s assertion that the Philippines fell within Portugal’s demarcation.
