Abstract: Lieutenant Colonel Earl Hancock Ellis (1880-1923) of the U.S Marine Corps ranks as one of the most enigmatic and legendary figures in 20th century American military history. In the fall of 1921, he embarked upon a confidential mission to the Pacific from which he never returned. After leaving the Yokohoma Naval Hospital on 6 October 1922, he became involved in spy activities, which ended with his death at Koror 12 May 1923.
